young CINE-PHILOSOPHERS
Drawing on the strong foundation of audiovisual education that has grown significantly in Greece in recent years, the “Young CINE-Philosophers” Student Short Film Competition seeks to foster and showcase the dialogue between philosophy and cinema. The initiative provides students with a creative platform for filmmaking, while encouraging critical reflection on fundamental questions of human existence and on the complex challenges of today’s world.
Each edition of the competition centres on a philosophical theme of major significance. The theme is selected by the Department of Philosophy of the University of Crete, whose faculty introduce participating student teams to its philosophical framework and key concepts.
The “Young CINE-Philosophers” Competition is a member of the UNESCO Media and Information Literacy Alliance and is open to students from lower-secondary and upper-secondary schools across Greece, public and private.
School Competition 2026
The philosophical theme of the 2026 “Young Cine-philosophers” competition is: “The motives behind our choices: autonomy and heteronomy”, inviting students to creatively express their thoughts on the motivations that shape human choices, the relevance and strength of the ideal of inner freedom and autonomy today, and the challenges involved in realizing these ideals in the modern world.
The 2026 “Young Cine-philosophers” competition is organized by the Department of Philosophy of the University of Crete, the Hellenic Film and Audiovisual Center, the non-profit cultural organization HE.art (Heraklion Art), and the Panayotis and Effie Michelis Foundation.
